Worlds 2010 – Day 1 – Hammer Time

0

The 2010 World Track Championships at the Ballerup Super Arena in Copenhagen opened with the qualifying session for the Women's Individual Puruit. Sarah Hammer of the USA dominated the session, qualifying for the final 2.5 seconds faster than her nearest rival, Great Britain's Wendy Houvenaghel. And to demonstrate that qualifying was no fluke, Hammer took almost 4 seconds out of her British rival in the Final.

Even more dominant was Australia's Cameron Meyer who took two laps on the field to win the Points Race with a massive 70 point haul. Meyer's on form team mate Anna Meares took the Women's 500m Time Trial, while pre-race Team Sprint favourites Great Britain had to settle for Bronze as Germany beat France to take the title.

Another day and another five World titles up for grabs. As always the titles will be decided this evening, but after this afternoon's qualifying sessions we know who'll be riding for the medals in the Men's Individual Pursuit, Women's Team Pursuit and Men's Team Sprint. And while the first was somewhat predictable and the second almost inevitable, the third may come as a surprise (unless you read our preview...).

With Minsk staging the last ever three rider, 3km Women's Team Pursuit, could the Great Britain trio keep up their incredible record and lower the World Record again in their penultimate ride?

There were four world titles up for grabs on the opening day of the UCI Track Cycling World Championships at the Velódromo Alcides Nieto Patiño in Cali. Qualifying for the Men's Team Pursuit had seen Denmark pip Australia on the timesheets while Germany were hot favourites for the Men's and Women's Team Sprint. The Women's Scratch Race is always tough to call, but Katarzyna Pawlowska of Poland was looking to make it three in a row.

It was business as usual for Team GB at the opening day of the first round of the 2013-2014 Track Cycling World Cup series in Manchester. Taking two Golds, a Silver (two, really...) and a Bronze with a combination of familiar faces and - for many of the sell-out audience, at least - new faces.

The opening session of the 2012 UCI Track Cycling World Championships saw Great Britain and Australia dominate the Team Pursuit qualification with Great Britain setting the fastest qualifying time in history to set up a thrilling Final in front of a packed Hisense Arena.

And what a Final it was with the lead swinging back and forth by a few thousandths, lap after lap... Add some controversy in the Team Sprint, a dramatic end to the Men's Scratch Race and two World Records and it was quite an evening!
