The Sprint Omnium opened with a 200m Time Trial and it was Great Britain’s Victoria Williamson who topped the time sheets with an 11.700. Team mate Danielle Khan came very close to breaking the 12 second barrier – clocking 12.002 to go second. Yvonne Hijgenaar of the Netherlands was 3rd, briefly, with a 12.072 until her team mate Elis Ligtlee popped in a 12.009.
The first round/Semi Finals saw Williamson comfortably past Hijgenaar with Ligtlee edging out Khan to set up two Anglo-Dutch Finals, with Williamson holding off Ligtlee to take the win.
In the Team Sprint there were no problems with timing or changeover zones as Williamson and Khan clocked a 35.703 to Hijgenaar and Ligtlee’s 36.195, leaving Williamson effectively uncathchable with just the Keirin to come. Just to make sure, though, she took the closest finish of the evening ahead of Khan, Hijgenaar and Ligtlee.

In the DHL Future Stars competition – dominated for the last three years by Emily Ka
y – it was Jessica Roberts of Raleigh-GAC who opened the competition with a dominant win in the Points Race taking two wins and a third place in the opening three sprints to wrap up the win with one sprint still to go. Emily Capewell of WD40 took the final sprint – and with it second place, edging out Emily Haycox of Howies.
Haycox’ team mate Ellie Coster took the 6 Lap Dash from Emily Nelson of IG Sigmasport with Roberts taking third and it was a team 1-2 in the Scratch Race with Haycox just ahead of Coster. Robets, though, was third again and her consistency across the evening left her on top of the overall standings heading in to Round 2.
In the Boys competition, a close finish in a fast and furious Scratch race saw Tristan Robbins of Howies edge out IG Sigmasport’s Ben Chapman and NetApp-Endura’s Gabriel Cullaigh. Leon Gledhill led home Sportscover-Altura team mate Levi Moody in the 6 Lap Dash with Joe Evans of Rudy Project racing in third place.
Moody took the first sprint in an eventful Points Race with Evans second, Robbins third and Fabio Close of Maxgear in third. Harrison Fielding of Raleigh GAC took sprint two ahead of Gledhill, Cullaigh and Sky’s James Shaw but at the half way point Matt Gibson of WD40 clipped his front wheel on Max Stedman of IG Sigmasport’s rear as they came on to the home straight and went down hard. The crash at the front of the race caused a chain reaction that brought down half a dozen more riders, before another 5 went down as the field entered turn one.
A number of riders – including Chapman (puncture) and Charlie Tanfield of Rouleur with a huge splinter in his upper arm – were unable to continue and the field was brought off the track while repairs were made.
When the race resumed it was Jack Hoyle of Rapha Condor Sharp who took the penultimate sprint from team mate Ethan Lee, Robbins and Moody. That put Moody ahead on 6 points from Hoyle and Fielding and a second place for Moody in the final sprint tied up the win. Gibson recovered from his spill to win that final sprint, with Stedman – who stayed up in the initial coming together – taking third ahead of Joe Wiltshire of Howies. That left Gibson in second place overall with Hoyle taking third and ensured that Robbins left Manchester leading the DHL Future Stars Boys competition.
How do you top that? Well, the next round will see an omnium competition featuring double Olympic Road Race Champion and nine times World Champion (five cyclo-cross. two road and two track) Marianne Vos and the former team pursuit World Champion Lizzie Armitstead who took Silver behind Vos in London and was part of the TV commentary team this evening.
