Junior Worlds 2013 – Day 4 Evening

-

Three medals decided on the penultimate day of competition in the UCI Juniors Track World Championships at the Sir Chris Hoy Velodrome in Glasgow. The Men’s Omnium, the Women’s Points Race and the Women’s Sprint – and there were a couple of medals to send the home crowd away happy.

Men’s Sprint

Quarter Finals

The competition in the Men’s Sprint was so close that three of the four Quarter Finals needed a deciding third race. Fastest qualifier Patrick Constable of Australia won his opening match with Jan May, but the German took him by surprise in the second and powered away to tie up the series. Constable made no mistake in the decider and progressed to Sunday’s Semi Finals.

No such worries from Jeremy Presbury of New Zealand who breezed through his contest with Russia’s Aleksey Lysenko in two rides. Jai Angsuthasawit of Australia went one up in his contest with Vladislav Fedin of Russia, but that was as close as he got to the Semis, Fedin taking the other two rides.

The last of the Quarter Finals went to three, too, with Svajunas Jonauskas of Lithuania going ahead in the match with Zac Williams of New Zealand. The Kiwi tied it up in the second heat, but he couldn’t stay with Jonauskas in the decider.

Women’s Sprint

There were no such problems in the Women’s Sprint Semi Finals. Danielle Khan made it look easy, progressing to the Final in two rides of her match with Melissandre Pain of France. And Nicky Degrendele of Belgium – who had looked strong throughout the competition, eased passed Team Sprint Bronze medallist Yeonhee Jang of Korea without the need for a third ride.

Pain took the Bronze medal in two – Jang starting to look tired in the latter stages. The crowd then seemed to expect a quick and decisive conclusion to the Gold medal ride. Khan had already taken the 500m Time Trial jersey and had looked untroubled by any of her opponents in the Sprint competition. They were underestimating Degrendele, though, and she shocked the arena with a commanding win in the opening ride.

The second was much closer and the crowd was delighted that it was Khan that nicked it on the line. Bouyed by that, Khan took the third comfortably to add a second rainbow jersey to her wardrobe. And there’s the Keirin to come tomorrow.

Women’s Points Race

 JW45088

A group of six riders sealed the fate of the Women’s Points Race when they took a decisive – if not exactly rapid – lap on the rest of the field around half distance. The group of Ann-Leonie Wiechmann of Germany, Svetlana Vasilieva of Russia, Jessica Parra of Colombia, Hayley Jones of Great Britain, Elissa Wundersitz of Australia and Arianna Fidanza of Italy.

By the final sprint, there were only four riders in contention for the medals with Fidanza and Wundersitz still in the running for the Gold and Jones and Parra battling for the Bronze. Fidanza made sure of the win by taking the final sprint, ahead of Wundersitz. Jones took fourth on the line and with Parra only 8th the Briton took the Bronze.
