Day three of the 2012 UCI Track Cycling World Championships providing the same mix of thrilling raccing and controversial decisions as the previous two days and, though we didn’t see another World Record, we saw no less than 10 riders qualify for the Men’s Sprint competition in under 10 seconds – which is a record.
As well the Men’s Sprint kicking off, the Women’s Omnium began, the Men’s Omnium and the Women’s Sprint conculuded and we had the Women’s Scratch Race. Busy day!

Men’s Sprint
Unlike the Women’s Sprint competition, the World Record was never under threat in qualification – hardly suprising, given that it was set on the monster track in Moscow. But there was a record set for the number of riders breaking the ten second barrier in qualification – no less than 10 – with the 11th only 3 thousandths outside.
Fastest of them was Grégory Baugé with a 9.854, back to try to recapture his the World title after his contriversial -in France anyway – loss of the 2011 title for a whereabouts violation. Robert Foestermann of Germany was next up on 9.873, followed by Baugé’s team mate Sireau at 9.893. Sir Chris Hoy was the first of the 9.9s in fourth on 9.902 – the same time as early leader Matthew Glaetzer of Australia who separated Hoy from compatriot Jason Kenny on 9.953. Eddy Dawkins of New Zealand,, Shane Perkins of Australia, Michael Bourgain of france and Stefan Boetticher of Germany were the remaining 9 second men.
