World Cup Manchester 2009 – Day 2

Great Britain dominated the medals table again with another three Golds and a clean sweep in the Men’s Sprint. Australia fought back with two and Belgium took the sixth of the day.

Men’s Sprint

With the top French sprinters absent, Great Britain was always favourite to take medals in the Men’s Sprint but the strength in depth will have surprised many. In the opening 200m Time Trial the Brits took the top three spots with Jason Kenny third with a time of 10.079. Matt Crampton second, a hundredth of a second quicker and Hoy top of the heap with a phenomenal 9.869.

The first round heats saw all three go through – along with team mate Ross Edgar, who also qualified, in 7^th spot. The British quartet was joined in the Quarter finals by Shane Perkins and Daniel Ellis of Australia, France’s Michaël D’Almeida (riding for US Creteil) and Damian Zielinski of Poland. Ellis – riding for Jayco – won his heat with a spectacular Awang-style wheelie.

His reward was a Quarter Final match with Chris Hoy and in the first of race he boldly pinned the Scotsman against the barrier for two laps before Hoy wriggled free and powered through to take the match in two straight wins. Kenny had no trouble moving through to the Semis, beating Zielinski 2-0 and Perkins saw off D’Almeida without the need for a decider. The draw kept most of the British riders apart, but Edgar was drawn against Crampton and the latter’s raw power was two much, again going through in two races.

Great Britain were now guaranteed at least two medals – one of them at least a Silver. Crampton was again in an all British heat – this time against Olympic Silver medallist Jason Kenny, but it was the power of the big man that told again, with Crampton booking a place in the final in two. Perkins couldn’t stop Hoy joining him – or stop Kenny from competing an all British podium, the first for the men at a world class event.

Crampton’s third GB tie in a row ended, unlike the first two, with a defeat to the unstoppable, majestic Sir Chris Hoy.

Women’s Individual Pursuit

Great Britain’s Wendy Houvenaghel destroyed the competition, qualifying for the final with a time nine seconds faster than her nearest rival, Josephine Tomic of Australia. Vera Koedooder of the Netherlands missed out on a place in the Gold medal ride by less than half a second and was joined in the Bronze medal ride-off by Leire Olaberria of Spain who was only a further tenth of a second back.

Houvenhagel showed that her qualifying performance was a good indication of her fine form, catching Tomic in the latter stages to take the Gold and continuing to set a time just 2 seconds slower than she had earlier.
